Randomization of questions and answers

Randomization of questions and answers

You can randomize the order in which your questions and answers appear.

Let's see how it's done. Start by logging in!

1 Randomize questions

Randomize questions means that all of your questions will be shuffled in a random order every time someone opens the questionnaire. This can be useful for a quiz when you don't want respondents to look at each others' answers, as everyone will be have their questions in a different order.

Once you have created your questionnaire, head to the Extra Options tab. Scroll down to Question logic and click Question grouping & Question pool.

You can use Randomization in two different ways:

  1. Randomize all questions
  2. Randomize several questions and keep some questions fixed in place

1.1 Randomize all questions

When you want to apply Randomization to all the questions, turn on Randomize questions in Question Block 1 (the only Question Block you have). All your questions will appear in a random order, and the order will change every time.

1.2 Randomize several questions

If you only want to Randomize several questions, you can work with Question Blocks

Question blocks is the tool that allows you to group your questions together. You can move questions between the blocks and decide which question blocks to enable the question pool feature.

For example you might want the first and the last questions to be fixed because they are data collection questions, and the quiz questions in the middle to be shuffled.

Tip: When you move questions to a later question block, the question numbers will be automatically updated.

Click Create question block twice, to add two new question blocks.

Now we'll need to move the different questions to the correct question block.

Select the questions you want to be randomized and choose QB2 from the drop-down menu to move them to question block 2.

Now you'll want to move the questions that you want to appear after the randomized questions to question block 3.

Tip: If there are a lot of questions to be moved, select the check box on top of the list to select all questions, then un-check the ones which you do not want to move.

Great, so now you have 3 blocks of questions. Question block 2 contains the quiz questions that you want to be randomized. It's time to turn on randomization in this question block only. Don't forget to click Apply when you're done.

Tip: It is possible to activate group questions on the same screen at the same time as randomize questions. Your question order will then look like this:

Tip: if you need to delete a question block, be sure to move the questions to a different question block first. It is not possible to delete a question block which contains questions.

2 Randomize answers

You can easily randomize the order of your answers for one or more specific questions. Underneath the answers of each question you'll see a couple of features. You want to turn on the option to shuffle answers every time the survey is opened.

Randomize all you like, now you know what to do!
